Lower Porthamel is situated one mile north of Talgarth, just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park. It is a lowland farm combining arable land and meadow pasture with valuable environmentally important areas. Our farm is renowned for its high quality crops and livestock produced on the fine Breconshire red sandstone soil, which is very fertile and easily worked.
We currently run a herd of pedigree North Devon cattle which calve all-
Our main sheep flock consists of 250 pedigree Lleyn ewes which are supplemented by some Texel crosses to provide larger, and faster fattening lambs. All our sheep lamb indoors from February to March before being turned out on our pasture land, and fattened on our own cereals.
We are part of The Countryside Council for Wales Tir Gofal scheme which encourages agricultural practices that protect and enhance the landscape. The beautiful River Llynfi meanders for a mile through our river pastures and is home to several otter families.
Farm Manager Matthew Johnson and his partner, Eleanor, moved to Lower Porthamel in February 2013 from West Oxfordshire. Although neither of them have worked a strictly organic system before, they are looking forward to producing quality and affordable food in a sustainable way. Their long term goal is to continue to provide our butcher’s shop with high quality meat, while increasing consumer awareness about provenance and sustainability.
The farm is also home to Eleanor’s horse, Freya (who is also fed organic hay and GM free food), and a terrier, Marmite (who as officer in charge of the platoon of farm cats provides organically approved pest control!)
